The Tokugawa Era was an era of good trade and industry. People in that era lived in between the cities Kyoto and Edo in Japan. The main city was Edo and it was one the of the largest cities in the world. There was a big economic change in which banking flourished and paper money became the new normal. Farm families were able to make a lot of money, but pheasants were forced to become hired helpers due to the economy.
During this era, social classes became very strict. They were warriors, pheasants, artisans, and merchants. Marriage between classes was forbidden. Women took care of the household while men did heavy labor.
In this era, great writers were born including Ihara Saikaku who wrote Five Women Who Loved Love. The poet Matsuo Basko was also born during the time period of the 1700s. He wrote exquisite poetry about nature. Kabuki theatre became quite popular which men only put on plays on the world of tea-houses and dance halls in the cities. the art during this time reflect changes in Japanese culture under the Tokugawa Era. Nobles competed to have the best houses with the best furnishings. Some of the art was enriched by ideas from other cultures. They also studied Western astronomy, medicine, languages, and painting styles. Overall, the Tokugawa Era was an era of improvement.
